Special/Emergency Review

Name: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Author: J.K. Rowling (bow down mere mortals)
Book Rating:
Movie Rating:

A little summary before I begin...

The war against Voldemort is not going well; even the Muggles have been affected. Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts for long stretches of time, and the Order of the Phoenix has already suffered losses. And yet . . . As with all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Harry receives some extraordinary help in Potions from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. And with Dumbledore's guidance, he seeks out the full, complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort -- and thus finds what may be his only vulnerability.

Taschima:

Well, well, well, yet another HP movie, and I gotta say... I don't hate it.

Long ago I gave up on this idea that the movie would or should be completely like the book. I mean if it were, well, we would have to sit down and watch a 6 hour movie- i would be completely fine with this, but the non fans would not be happy. So I cope, and I move on, and I try to rate the movie for it being a well made movie, with kick ass effects, and that has the MAIN story all right, also that it doesn't seem hurried along, or plain WTF.

So saying this I think this is one of the best HP movies to have come out, besides the first two ones, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, because lets face it, those books are the shortest and with less information of all 7, so they made quite decent movies out of them.

This movie had the MAIN idea quite well, although, am, I had trouble looking for Sirius will, and parts of the trailers, or was it just my over reactive imagination? I think not. I guess if Sirius is dead, why give it another thought? Ugh, I hate it when they cut out those little but important details, like on the third movie, Prisoner of Azkaban, that they cut all HP's parents and Snape's past, with a LOT of more things. I HATED that movie.

Effects, now that was AMAZING. Like come one, it was, you cannot say it wasn't. The way they visited Dumbledore's memories? That was KICK ASS. And Fred and George's shop, LOL. Not to mention the cave were the horrocrux was found, perfection.

The movie did not seem like they were running out of time, *cough* like the third one *ends cough* I have a problem with the third movie, and its sad cause that IS my fav book. This one however ran smoothly, with no rush.

The dark theme helped too, this one had the very dark vibe, the things-are-very-bad vibe. It was so fitting. And in the end, how they show the tables with no children laughing and having fun, it clearly marks the end of their childhood, and the beginning of new things, for better or worse. But I did not like the end because that wasn't how it was suppose to end, it was an ok ending.

I gave it 4 hearts for the mere fact that while I may cope with the total rape of the book, I do not support it. And they cut a lot of scenes, and even changed things-Harry's and Ginny's kiss? please I wish they would have left that alone, but for that they needed to put other stuff that they cut/changed... and blah blah.

Overall, I am going to watch it again, and again, and maybe a fourth time. Ok I confess I am planning to watch it 6 times, it's the 6th movie! SUE ME!

Ps; Ron was HOT, but I still love me Harry.

  1. Great review, I haven't watched a Harry Movie since the first one. They were just too different and I want to remember Harry just how he is in my mind. That being said I do plan on rereading all the books for the new challenge at GalleySmith's blog.

  2. @Trin I could not live without watching the movies, my mom would be talking about them all the bloody time and I would not take it, and just go watch them, besides my meter of fan is in the skies by now, I love HP. But I get your point, they looked so, innocent in the first movie.

I'm not doing the challenge since I already read all 7 books, and OMG is the 7th book gooood!

  3. I really liked the 6th movie. Sure, they couldn't stay completely faithful to the book, but on the whole I think they captured the mood and the main points. Furthermore, the script and acting was far superior to earlier movies, with the exception of #5 that was also much improved in the script and acting areas. I don't really like the first 2 movies because while they stuck to the book more, they are horribly acted and have terrible dialog and stuff, and you just can't have a good movie with bad acting and bad script. It's a shame, because they COULD have done well. The third movie was a NIGHTMARE, ugh, it's my favorite book too and they completely butchered it. Fourth movie somehow came off as goofy which is just weird. Thankfully they changed writers, directors, etc for the 5th and while most people didn't like that one, I thought it was much, much better than earlier movies. Half-Blood Prince exceeded it, though. I really need to go see it again!

  4. I liked the 6th movie a lot but I thought more was going to happen at the end! I was a little disapointed with that ... but you're right. The effects were friggin amazing.

  5. I liked the 6th movie quite a bit~ While it was nothing like the book, and they changed a few things that I was looking forward to (like Dumbledore telling off the Dursleys in the beginning)

Good review though! I still think they should just make movies really long for us to watch. lol

  6. I wish in the sixth movie they had Bill and Fluer. They were a big part of the 6th book (at the beginning).

  7. I thought it needed more dialogue, personally. It was pretty good though, not my fave, but still worth watching, oh, a couple hundred more times. ;)

  9. Wow. I'm a major HP fan, and book 6 is my favorite book of the series. Unfortunately, this was the most disappointing movie, IMO. To me, the main piece of this book is learning about Tom Riddle's past! And what did we get? The orphanage flashback and 2 with Slughorn? I felt completely ripped off, to say the least. I have many other complaints, but will refrain. I was very impressed with Ron's performance, as well as Draco. I thought they shined in this movie. And I really liked the cave scene, which was one of my fav. scenes from the book.

  10. okay I had to watch it too, even though I said I wouldn't. I have to agree with Ash, it is my favorite of the books and I disliked the movie. O well maybe they can do better with the 7th. . .
