An extraordinary debut novel of love that survives the fires of hell and transcends the boundaries of time.

On a burn ward, a man lies between living and dying, so disfigured that no one from his past life would even recognize him. His only comfort comes from imagining various inventive ways to end his misery. Then a woman named Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room, a wild-haired, schizophrenic sculptress on the lam from the psych ward upstairs, who insists that she knows him – that she has known him, in fact, for seven hundred years. She remembers vividly when they met, in another hospital ward at a convent in medieval Germany, when she was a nun and he was a wounded mercenary left to die. If he has forgotten this, he is not to worry: she will prove it to him.

And so Marianne Engel begins to tell him their story, carving away his disbelief and slowly drawing him into the orbit and power of a word he'd never uttered: love.

Taschima's POV:

This is one of the best books Ive read. And it is strange, cause it is so different from things I usually read.

Usually I read about vampires, werewolves, and other stuff, in fact I picked this up because I thought it was going to be involved more with the supernatural. But it involves reality more than anything else.

My favorite part of the entire book is the writing. Oh my God, this author can write, and this is a debut novel! It easily captivates you. He throws at you aspects of real life, while giving you little pushes that make you wonder. I think his main character was too personal, like if the author was talking to you about his ideas. His believes, everything, and they are amazing.

And the research which he had to do must have been a lot cause this book goes deeply into the aspects of treating a burning patient, while giving you glimpses to the past.

I loved the characters. They were real. I think if I met the main character in real life, I would not like him. He is a snob. But reading about him, being inside his mind, was a fantastic ride. And don't even get me started on Marianne. You will think she is nuts, and yeah, maybe she is, but she is also incredible.

All in all, fantastic read. All I really got left to say is READ IT NOW!

  2. I've seen the cover around, never known what it was about. The cover still blows me away, and I still wonder about this book. But it's a good wonder, the kind of curiosity I want to sate by reading the book. Thanks for the great review!
