Waiting on Wednesday Guys: Books For Girls and Boys Edition (5x)

Dragonswood
by Janet Lee Carey
Expected publication: Jan 5th, 2012 by Dial
Wilde Island is in an uproar after the recent death of its king. The uneasy pact between dragons, fairies, and humans is fraying, and a bloodthirsty witch hunter with a hidden agenda whips villages into frenzies with wild accusations. Tess, a blacksmith’s daughter from a tiny hamlet near the mysterious Dragonswood, finds herself caught in the crosshairs of fate when she is accused of witchery and has to flee for her life along with her two best friends.
Not even Tess’s power to see the future can help the girls as they set off on their desperate journey, but she keeps having visions of a man wielding a sword. And when she finally meets him, Tess has no idea how to handle the magnetic attraction she feels for him, or the elusive call she hears from the heart of the Dragonswood.
In this epic romance, an ancient prophecy comes true in a way neither dragon, fairy, nor human would have predicted.

I gasped . . . or tried to. My mouth opened, but I couldn’t draw breath. . . . His lips, pearly wet, parted and he blew into my mouth. My lungs expanded beneath his weight. When I exhaled he sucked in my breath and his weight turned from cold marble into warm living flesh.
Since accepting a teaching position at remote Fairwick College in upstate New York, Callie McFay has experienced the same disturbingly erotic dream every night: A mist enters her bedroom, then takes the shape of a virile, seductive stranger who proceeds to ravish her in the most toe-curling, wholly satisfying ways possible. Perhaps these dreams are the result of writing her bestselling book, The Sex Lives of Demon Lovers. After all, Callie’s lifelong passion is the intersection of lurid fairy tales and Gothic literature—which is why she finds herself at Fairwick’s renowned folklore department, living in a once-stately Victorian house that, at first sight, seemed to call her name.
But Callie soon realizes that her dreams are alarmingly real. She has a demon lover—an incubus—and he will seduce her, pleasure her, and eventually suck the very life from her. Then Callie makes another startling discovery: He’s not the only mythical creature in Fairwick. As the tenured witches of the college and the resident fairies in the surrounding woods prepare to cast out the incubus, Callie must accomplish something infinitely more difficult—banishing this demon lover from her heart.

Set against the backdrop of a Coney Island summer comes The Vicious Deep, the story of sixteen year old Tristan Hart whose life is turned upside down when the mermaids make an unscheduled return to land in search of their new king.
When a sudden storm pulls Tristan from lifeguard duty into a deadly riptide, he discovers what he really is—a prince of the Sea Court. Turns out, his girlfriend hopping and talents as a swimmer aren’t caused by his teenage prime hormones after all.
In this modern Arthurian tale with a twist, when all a guy wants to do is get The Girl and enjoy the freak show that is a Coney Island summer, Tristan has to fight for his life, the lives of his friends, and his humanity, if he still wants it, as he’s caught in a race for a throne that is as ancient as the gods.

The Pearl Wars (Skyship Academy #1)

Paperback, 384 pages
Expected publication: September 8th 2011 by Flux
A devastated Earth’s last hope is found in Pearls: small, mysterious orbs that fall from space, and are capable of supplying enough energy to power entire cities. Battling to control the Pearls are the Skyship dwellers—political dissidents who live in massive ships in the Earth’s stratosphere—and the corrupt Surface government.
Jesse Fisher, a Skyship brat, and Cassius Stevenson, a young Surface operative, cross paths when they both venture into forbidden territory in pursuit of Pearls. Their chance encounter triggers an unexpected reaction, endowing each boy with remarkable—and dangerous—abilities that their respective governments would stop at nothing to possess. Enemies thrust together with a common goal, Jesse and Cassius make their way to the ruins of Seattle to uncover the truth about their new powers, the past they didn’t know they shared, and a shocking secret about the Pearls.
Doesn't it seem sometimes like YA covers are directed towards the girl population? Don't get me wrong, they completely resonate with me, but I was thinking that there should be more "hardcore" covers out there so we can get the male population to pick up a book or two. So this edition I found 3 covers for girls that are to die for, and 2 covers that look like the kind of covers any guy can go for ;)

I love the cover of Dragonswood! I love the pose, the dress, the way the colors contrast, how the girl looks like she's floating... It's just great overall. The summary of this one sounds YA Fantasy, which is a new color on me so I can't wait to try it on. I also REALLY like the cover of Demon Lover, but I can't help but think of Fallen and Lauren Kate whenever I see it. It has the same style, but it's still sort of different. Anyways, what really got me was the summary, it seems more of an adult novel than YA, but I can so dig that.

Now I think the cover for The Vicious Deep was released yesterday. I saw it @The Pirate Penguin's blog (a very good friend of mine).  At first I saw the blood and thought "Vampires!!" but then I looked closely at the girl's face and noticed scales so then I thought "Vampire... Mermaids? O.o") but then it clicked and now my head is going "Psycho killing mermaids!!!!". Another modern retelling of an old tale (those seem to be going around; do the authors get the same urge to write stuff like this at the same time?) but with mermaids and battles and and mermaids!

Now these next two covers I thought were very male friendly. They look very kick ass. Black Hole Sun seems mysterious, and the summary reminds me a lil bit of The Chronicles of Nick series by fabulous Sherrilyn Kenyon. Oh and have you seen the new cover of The Pearl Wars by Nick James? It looks amazing! I remember I got an ARC of this book at BEA and the old cover didn't look half as good. Plus it comes complete with abilities and freaky pearls who give bunch of energy, what's not a girl or guy to love?

I really hope you add these books to your Wish List. I had tons of fun finding guy pleasing covers, so maybe let your guy friends know about them? Get them into the habit of reading!

PS; I am still working non stop and in the process of moving, so that is why the blog hasn't been updated daily with posts full of yummy info. But do not despair for I will be back soon!!

  2. I agree about the lack of "boy" covers. Someone gave me an ARC of Skyship Academy because I asked for more boy books. Dragonswood looks amazing! What a beautiful cover. I don't know why it reminds me of Swan Lake for some reason.
