Bookish Question

Is it easy for you to start new series?
Or even a new stand alone novel?

I find it quite difficult to leave a world behind. When I finish a novel, and I'm very into it, It's hard to believe that the next novel is going to be as good. Or that the new characters are going to make me fall in love like the others did. Or that the twists will be as good. So I post pone starting new books. I go about my day. I continue watching whatever it was I was watching on T.V. Take the control remote and look for HGTV. Guilty as charged. But once I get over my old book, and start a new fantastic novel there is nothing that can take me away from those pages. The characters seem bright and new. I take those twists and ride the wave. However, after it finishes I'm once again on step one. Sad because my last book ended, about to embark on yet another relationship. Not ever knowing if it's going to be as good as the one before.

Why doesn't everybody read? It's such a fantastic experience!

  1. I do the same thing! I didn't realize that I procrastinated on new series/books, but I totally do! Sometimes that's a good thing, though, because it allows me to come down from the high of the previous series so I don't start the next one with impossible expectations.

  3. Sometimes I get so caught up in the world, characters, etc that I'm reading that its really hard to let it go once I put it down. And I feel the same way, I have a hard time starting a new series because my head is still in the one I just finished. What I do is I grab a light, fun read or two or a Neil Gaiman book. It gives me something I can count on being entertained by while giving me time before diving into a new world/series.

  4. Yep I definitely worry about this. And i hate it when a series ends, because I worry that's the last I will see of that world. If a standalone is really good I worry that I won't get to see any more of the world either....
Books are definitely a drug. A good drug, that can make you smarter and give you eyestrain.lol.

  5. I had that problem after finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Mockingjay. If the series is a favorite of mine and I feel like I've become invested in the characters it is harder to move on to a different book/series.

When I do move on, I sometimes pick standalone books that are the total opposite of the amazing book I've just finished so I won't be able to compare the two. After reading Divergent by Veronica Roth (which I loved), I read a chick lit book for adults (Dolci di Love) and after reading Across the Universe I read a historical romance set in the Civil War. It helps to "reset".

  6. It depends on the book I've been reading. If they're standalone, I've no problems going on to the next one. It might take me a while to get used to new characters and their stories.

But if I've started a series and I don't have access to the next one, I struggle to start a new book because I keep thinking back to the series and wanting to know what's going to happen.

  7. @Bookish in a Box (like your name BTW) That's a nice way to put it, a high. It's just sometimes the characters are so real! Makes you think your there with them going through everything too. That's good writing.

@Maja Glad to know I'm not insane '>.<

@Donna What I do sometimes is just go back to an already read book (pretty much I pick up the first Night Huntress Novel I find and go to town with it).

@Natalievintagegirl Books are something that I cannot live without, and I don't understand people who don't like reading. No imagination perhaps?

@Christina When I first started reading Harry Potter I was very young, and after the third book (the fourth hadn't come out yet) I didn't know what to do with myself, so I just re read them until the point were the books were falling apart. Then my mother was like "Why don't you go and try another book?". I love that woman, she changed my life.

@Emma I usually dont read stand alones, but it's easier to move on on those since the ending is pretty final. It's like when I finished Delirium or Meridian, I just kept thinking back to the story and that usually cuts into my enjoyment of the next novel. I guess good books are both a blessing and a curse lol

  9. I have such a hard time starting a new book! Any new book - even ones I've been dying to read. It's a bit easier when I'm reading a series, but still challenging. Once I'm about 20 pages in, I do just fine, but starting a new book is tough. I like to read series because of that - and I like to wait until multiple books are out in a series and then read a few back to back.

  10. I agree! While I don't have a problem starting a new book/series, I do have a problem letting go of a series that I really love(d). Take for example, Harry Potter... I'm currently on rampage reading whatever I can about HP, fanfiction, tumblr, news... And I'm still waiting for that Welcome mail.

  11. I hate leaving a world in which I'm so emotionally invested. So, yeah, I agree with you. It's like a drug. I feel "hung over" when I turn the last page and there aren't any more.
