(2011) UK Cover
"Riley has always wanted to be a Demon Trapper like her father, and she's already following in his footsteps as one of the best. But it's tough being the only girl in an all-guy world, especially when three of those guys start making her life more complicated: Simon, the angelic apprentice who has heaven on his side; Beck, the tough trapper who thinks he's God's gift, and Ori, the strikingly sexy stranger who keeps turning up to save her ass. One thing's for sure - if she doesn't keep her wits about her there'll be hell to pay..."
I found this and I thought pretty cool cover, average summary. I am interested in the whole Demon Trapper part of it, but I kind of dislike when they put the tree some romance in the front just so us little girls will pick it up. Nevertheless! Pretty cool cover, and fine, I like romance but jeez joey mix it up a bit. Stop telling us up front the wonderful romance, unless the story is ALL about the romance which eeeeks, and leave us with a little suspense ;)
Anyways, I went looking for a link to the book again when I found another cover that has the same exact summary and a different title...

The Demon Trapper's Daughter (Demon Trappers #1) by Jana Oliver
(2011) US Cover
Same exact thing, I want to be like my dad, boys love me, I am kick ass, yada yada yada...
But this is the US cover! The cover now... What do you think? Better than the "Forsaken" cover? Is "Forsaken" a better title since it's smaller and so dark? It kinda gives the book a certain connotation, I mean The Demon Trapper's Daughter has a different ring than Forsaken. And the covers, which one do you prefer? I like the first one cause it looks pretty bad ass, it earned its Forsaken title, and the second one I like too because its a good picture, and it goes with it's title. But which would you be most likely to pick? The pretty enchanting cover or the dark cool cover?
I think I might just pick the first cover, but then again you never know which mood I am on the days I go book hunting ;)
the UK one looks more "timeless" than the US one, which is completely modern (sneakers!)
ReplyDeleteI'm just curious how the unbalanced-love-square-with-three-guys would work lol
Difficult choice, IMHO (and I'm the author). It appears that some sites (like Goodreads) show the UK back cover copy being used for the US edition. The copy is actually different and can be found here: http://us.macmillan.com/thedemontrappersdaughter
ReplyDeleteTwo different looks for essentially the same story (there are a few minor differences). Confusing, but I like the notion that readers can pick the cover/copy that resonates with them. Kinda cool, actually. Me, I love them both even if they are so totally different. But then I'm biased (wink).
I saw the first one a while ago and put it on my wish list. I've never seen the second one before. The second one's okay, but doesn't really grab my attention like the first. Same goes for the title. UK definitely wins here.
ReplyDelete@Jana Oliver Uuuh!! Hi!! I get very happy when authors come by and comment (which almost never happens btw). It is a very difficult choice because both covers are good and appealing, at the end of the day it really just depends on the person and their mood. I like dark and twisty, so I would have gotten with the first one, but I would have definitely picked the second one to check out what it was about ;)
ReplyDelete@ninefly HOPEFULLY it wont go all HON on us... Eeeks!!
Author raises right hand and solemnly swears that this series "won't go all HoN" on your guys. Riley's a one-guy girl. Of course, that doesn't mean things work out well for her. Kicks demon butt, gets perfect guy? No way. (evil grin). Things are never that tidy in my books. As you mentioned, this three-guy mention was to attract interest from the female readers.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between the US and UK editions is that the UK version is toned down just a smidge for their market. The short section about General Sherman and the Burning of Atlanta was removed because it was felt the UK readers might not be into the Civil War as much as US folk. Other than that, the UK version has more U's (favour, honour, colour) in case you're collecting them.
While I like the US cover, I definitely prefer the UK one. And FORSAKEN is much more appealing to me than the other title.

I get so frustrated when the titles are different--makes shopping so much harder--but I like the UK title better.
