Okay guys. Answer me honestly, do you continue books that bore you to death? Books that should have taken you nothing to finish, but every single time you set yourself to read them you just abhor the thought of digging into them again? I am reading a book right now that I have been reading for days, it is only 157 pages but it is not enjoyable. It has made me chuckle like 2-3 times, but that is about it. My question is, should I continue it? I feel like I should, but I really don't want to. If I do finish it is to see if there are any redeeming qualities, and to write a review that can say "I read this entire book, and it sucked", but I just as well could write "I tried to finish this book, and couldn't because it was just boring".

I used to stick it out with books, arguing the author put time and effort into writing the book. The thing is, not all books are created equal. With all the books out there you haven't had a chance to read yet, why struggle with a book that you're obviously not enjoying? (Hugs)Indigo
Ick. I just had one of those myself. But since it was a review book, I ended up slogging through it so I could get to the end. I guess it depends on whether or not it's a review book. If it is, I usually try to give it my absolute best shot at finishing it. If not, then I'll probably put it down if it's causing me that many problems, and maybe come back to it later.
Nope. I don't finish them, because I figure it is just using up time I could be starting another awesome book! The exception is if I feel like it just wasn't the right time to read the book, versus the book itself. Then I'll set it down and try again later on.
@Indigo True that.
@Natalie I feel the same if its a review book, and the one I was reading (yeah, finished it because I made myself do nothing else but finish it) is a review book. I shall review it now and let you guys know how badly it went.
@Jessica I know what you mean! Sometimes it is just not the right time to pick up a certain kind of book.
I agree with everything the other three said. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Typically, though I push through it - especially if it is for a review. But like Jessica said, sometimes I pick up a book and hate it at the time, but love it later. It's all in the timing. It is tough to stick with something you hate though. I find myself skipping through the book to get done faster to only miss important things and have to go back and re-read it...
No, if a book does not strike my fancy or amuse me in some way it gets the boot. But that's just me. =)
I say drop it, if a book bores me and I've read a fair amount, say 30 to 50 pages and I dread picking it back up to read then I don't. Why should you waste your time reading something you hate when you can be reading something you love?
I always feel like I SHOULD finish books that I start, but lately I have become very bad about finishing books I don't like... and even those I do. The busier I get, the less likely I am to finish something boring or just long.
Some books I stick it out with even if I don't like them, but if they're really horrible I give up and go on to something else. And I'm usually much happier for it.
Sadly, I do continue reading. I think I've only ever not finished one book in my entire life. I feel like I'm going to miss the good part if I quit!
I used to feel like I had to (especially with review books) because you never know if at some point the book will change and suddenly become great but I stopped doing that because really, why waste my time when I could read other books? And besides, even if you don't like it, someone else will. Reading shouldn't be painful.
...unless it's like for school or something. There you have no choice, lol.
I have a 100 page rule. If a book does not grab my attention by 100 pages, I do not feel bad letting it go. If it is a review book, I will do everything I can to finish it. I hate leaving books unread.
What turns me off are lots of grammatical and spelling mistakes. Sometimes, I have even caught continuity errors - like a character was shot, then later on in the text it was mentioned that the character was stabbed. Published books should be professionally edited and spell checked by not only the spell check program, but by a human who can tell the difference when to use certain words. Purple prose is another thing that will drive me crazy as I am reading.
There is also nothing wrong with reviewing a book that you have not finished if you state that you did not finish it and the reasons why. Not all books work for everyone. As long as you are professional about your review, it's OK.
I rarely stick it out anymore unless there have been a lot of excellent reviews and I'm curious about what I'm missing, or if I've liked the author's previous books. If I don't finish a book, I don't add it to Goodreads - I only focus on the ones I've read and enjoyed.
I personally don't usually continue with a book if it doesn't grab me. Life is too short and there are too many books out there that will make you happy to waste time on something that's not for you. But I can see how this would be a dilemma for a reviewer. I think it's awesome that you do this, you are a braver woman than I :)
I used to, and if its part of a series I enjoy or an author I enjoy I'll force myself to still, but for new to me authors/series I'll stop and try again in a couple months. If I still can't get through it...well I'll just give it to Tegs or trade it for a book I'll enjoy moreso.
I usually always stuck with it and forced myself through it, but last week i gave up on one. Now i'm just thinking that i have so many books I really want to read and review books I need to read that I can't waste my time on a book I'm not enjoying. So now I am more inclined to just leave it.
If it's too boring, I don't bother finishing it. Life is too short to waste on boring books.
Absolutely not. With the size of my TBR pile, I simply don't have the time to dwell on a book I just can't bring myself to finish. I do try. I really do. But if I end up begrudging reading it then it's completely lost for me. Reading shouldn't be a chore. When it becomes one then it's time to set it aside.
Nope, no way. I stop reading it. For years I had this thing about finishing every book I started no matter what, but one day I decided life is too short to waste time on things I don't enjoy. Now, if I don't like a book or can't get into it, I don't finish it.
I always finish my books. But I find with boring books it takes me a longer time to finish them. I hate that! Especially because I'm kind of a speed reader.
Now that I am blogging, I hate reading a boring book because it messes up my blogging process and takes me longer to update my content.
It depends. Sometimes I want to finish out of sheer stubbornness, and other times I stop because it just is too painful. I hate giving low ratings, but sometimes I have to but I try to back that rating up with what didn't work for me.
I used to finish EVERYTHING even the bad eggs, but nowadays I know better and I'd rather put the book down and try another one.
